Product Overview
What Is Cat 6A Plenum Cable?
Cat 6A (Augmented Category 6) is the Ethernet cabling standard for 10 Gigabit Ethernet to the full 100-meter channel at 750 MHz. Part 1477 is UTP: four individually twisted pairs of 23 AWG solid bare copper, with a cross-filler spline and CMP plenum jacket rated for open air-handling spaces under NEC 800.154(A).

CMP Plenum Jacket

Required by NEC 800.154(A) in any air-handling space — HVAC return ceilings, raised floors, and open plenums. The CMP jacket passes NFPA 262 (UL 910) low-smoke, low-flame-spread testing and may be installed without conduit in air plenums.

Cat 6A vs Cat 6

Cat 6A adds alien crosstalk (ANEXT) control through larger OD (0.295 in), tighter pair geometry, and a cross-filler spline. This enables 10GBase-T to 100m versus Cat 6 which is limited to 55m at 10G. Cat 6A also delivers superior PoE++ thermal performance in dense bundles.

CMP vs CMR

CMP (Plenum) is the highest NEC cable rating and can substitute for CMR, CM, or CMX anywhere in the building. CMR cable may not be used in plenum air-handling spaces. CMP’s NFPA 262-tested jacket limits toxic smoke and flame spread through HVAC systems.

Installation Guide
Cat 6A+ Plenum Installation Best Practices
1

Plan Pathways

Map horizontal runs to keep total channel length under 90m permanent link + 10m patch. Avoid shared pathways with electrical conduit.
2

Pull Cable

Use Syston EZ-Pull® lubricant-free technique. Maintain 25 lbs maximum tension. Never exceed 1-inch bend radius for the 0.295-in OD.
3

Separate from Power

Maintain 6-inch minimum separation from 120V/240V circuits. Use separate cable trays or dividers where parallel runs exceed 10 feet.
4

Terminate

Use Cat 6A-rated jacks and plugs. Limit pair untwist to 0.5 inch maximum at every termination.
5

Test and Verify

Test all channels with a Level IIIe or higher field tester to TIA Cat 6A permanent link limits.
6

Label System

Apply TIA-606-B compliant labels at both ends and patch panel ports before project closeout.
7

INSTALLER TIP

Pre-stage cable drums before pulling. Use cable combs in high-density trays. Test before walls close — never after.
Common Installation Mistakes
alert
Improper grounding
Floating shields on screened cable create ground loops that worsen EMI performance.
alert
Over-untwisting pairs
Untwist no more than 0.5 inch per termination. Excess untwist increases near-end crosstalk.
alert
Mixing categories
One Cat 5e jack limits the entire channel to Cat 5e performance — weakest link governs.
alert
Parallel power routing
AC power runs induce EMI into Cat 6A pairs. Maintain a minimum 6-inch separation.

FAQ

Cat 6A+ Plenum Cable Questions

Is Part 1477 backwards compatible with Cat 5e and Cat 6 equipment?
Yes. Cat 6A+ is fully backwards compatible with Cat 5e, Cat 6, and Cat 6e equipment. The cable and connectors support all lower-speed protocols. Performance is always governed by the weakest link in the channel — patch cables and jacks must also be Cat 6A-rated for 10GBase-T operation.
Can I use Part 1477 for PoE++ (802.3bt) applications?
Yes. The 23 AWG solid copper conductors and UTP construction of Part 1477 meet the thermal and DC resistance requirements for IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 (60W) and Type 4 (90W) PoE++ at the full 100-meter channel length. Cat 6A is the minimum recommended category for high-density 4PPoE deployments per TIA TSB-184-A.
What is the difference between Part 1477 (CMP) and Part 1476 (CMR)?
Part 1477 has a CMP (plenum) jacket rated by NFPA 262 / UL 910 for installation in air-handling spaces without conduit. Part 1476 has a CMR (riser) jacket for vertical shafts, conduit, and non-plenum horizontal runs. CMP can substitute for CMR anywhere in the building; CMR cannot be used in plenum spaces.
What field tester do I need to certify Cat 6A+ channels?
Use a Level IIIe or higher field tester with Cat 6A permanent link or channel adapters. Common options include the Fluke DSX-600, DSX-8000, and IDEAL Networks LanTEK IV. Test to TIA-568.2-D Cat 6A permanent link limits and retain test reports for AHJ submittal.
How does Cat 6A handle alien crosstalk (ANEXT)?
Cat 6A+ adds alien crosstalk suppression through a larger cable OD (0.295 in), tighter pair geometry, and a cross-filler spline that physically separates the four pairs. When bundles exceed 24 cables, Syston recommends staggered pathway layouts and verified bundle configurations per TIA TSB-155-A.
Is Part 1477 suitable for AV-over-IP (AV/IP) installations?
Yes. Cat 6A+ is the preferred category for SDVoE, NDI, and Dante AV-over-IP protocols that require full-duplex 10GBase-T at 100 meters. The low-latency channel characteristics of Cat 6A are critical for video applications where jitter tolerance is tight.
What is the maximum installation tension for Cat 6A+ cable?
Do not exceed 25 lbs (110 N) pulling tension on Part 1477. Use cable guides at direction changes and avoid tight conduit fill. Crush resistance is 25 lbs/ft. Kinked cable fails ANEXT tests and must be replaced.
Can I use Part 1477 outdoors or in direct burial applications?
No. Part 1477 is rated for indoor air-handling space installation only. For outdoor applications, use a CMX or direct-burial-rated cable. For outdoor runs with conduit, the conduit provides sufficient protection but the cable’s plenum rating does not add UV or moisture resistance.
What connector type does Part 1477 require?
Part 1477 requires Cat 6A-rated RJ45 plugs and keystone jacks. Using Cat 5e or Cat 6 termination hardware limits the channel to the lower category’s performance specification. Verify plug OD compatibility with the 0.295-in cable OD before ordering bulk connectors.
Does Syston provide cut sheets and submittals for Part 1477?
Yes. Contact Syston Technical Support for cut sheets, UL listing verification letters, sample test reports, and CSI MasterFormat spec sections for project submittal packages.

TECHNICAL AUTHORITY

Syston Engineering Team Notes

  • Cat 6A+ cable meets TIA-568-C.2-1 augmented category 6A specifications, supporting 10GBASE-T at 100m with alien crosstalk (ANEXT) margins that exceed the minimum requirement. When specifying for high-density patch panel environments, verify the ANEXT performance of the specific brand — not all Cat 6A products perform equally in bundled channel tests.
  • Plenum-rated Cat 6A+ (CMP) is required in any environmental air-handling space per NEC 800.154. Do not substitute CMR (riser) cable in plenum ceilings even inside conduit unless the NEC authority having jurisdiction approves the conduit as a sealed raceway system — verify locally.
  • For 802.3bt Type 3 and Type 4 PoE++ applications (60W–90W), use 23 AWG or larger conductors and verify that the installed channel meets TIA TSB-184-A thermal guidelines for bundled PoE cable. De-rate ampacity for cables bundled more than 4 deep per NEC 310.15.
  • Cat 6A+ supports alien crosstalk performance through improved pair twist rates and internal separator geometry — field termination technique is critical. Poor termination quality (excessive untwisting at punch-down, improper pairing) is the leading cause of ANEXT failures in field-certified channels. Follow TIA-568 termination procedures exactly.
