What Is Cat 6A Plenum Cable?
Cat 6A (Augmented Category 6) is the Ethernet cabling standard for 10 Gigabit Ethernet to the full 100-meter channel at 750 MHz. Part 1477 is UTP: four individually twisted pairs of 23 AWG solid bare copper, with a cross-filler spline and CMP plenum jacket rated for open air-handling spaces under NEC 800.154(A).
CMP Plenum Jacket
Required by NEC 800.154(A) in any air-handling space — HVAC return ceilings, raised floors, and open plenums. The CMP jacket passes NFPA 262 (UL 910) low-smoke, low-flame-spread testing and may be installed without conduit in air plenums.
Cat 6A vs Cat 6
Cat 6A adds alien crosstalk (ANEXT) control through larger OD (0.295 in), tighter pair geometry, and a cross-filler spline. This enables 10GBase-T to 100m versus Cat 6 which is limited to 55m at 10G. Cat 6A also delivers superior PoE++ thermal performance in dense bundles.
CMP vs CMR
CMP (Plenum) is the highest NEC cable rating and can substitute for CMR, CM, or CMX anywhere in the building. CMR cable may not be used in plenum air-handling spaces. CMP’s NFPA 262-tested jacket limits toxic smoke and flame spread through HVAC systems.

Is Part 1477 backwards compatible with Cat 5e and Cat 6 equipment?
Yes. Cat 6A+ is fully backwards compatible with Cat 5e, Cat 6, and Cat 6e equipment. The cable and connectors support all lower-speed protocols. Performance is always governed by the weakest link in the channel — patch cables and jacks must also be Cat 6A-rated for 10GBase-T operation.
Can I use Part 1477 for PoE++ (802.3bt) applications?
Yes. The 23 AWG solid copper conductors and UTP construction of Part 1477 meet the thermal and DC resistance requirements for IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 (60W) and Type 4 (90W) PoE++ at the full 100-meter channel length. What is the difference between Part 1477 (CMP) and Part 1476 (CMR)?

Do not exceed 25 lbs (110 N) pulling tension on Part 1477. Use cable guides at direction changes and avoid tight conduit fill. Crush resistance is 25 lbs/ft. Kinked cable fails ANEXT tests and must be replaced.
Can I use Part 1477 outdoors or in direct burial applications?
No. Part 1477 is rated for indoor air-handling space installation only. For outdoor applications, use a CMX or direct-burial-rated cable. For outdoor runs with conduit, the conduit provides sufficient protection but the cable’s plenum rating does not add UV or moisture resistance.
